hp tx 1000 300x300 NEVER buy an HP laptop

As an ex-loyal HP customer, I bought my 3rd HP laptop, an HP TX1210us for $1349.99 on August 17th 2007, thinking I was set for a good 3 or 4 years, boy, was I wrong!

I’ve been a computers tech for around 10 years, and besides always taking good care of my gadgets, this one in specific was barely used (it still looks new), because I mainly use my desktop computer (good thing it’s not an HP).

The Problem

The nice looking HP tx1210us worked fine for one year and a half (which translates to a little over 100 uses) until it suddenly died today, with no previous symptoms, it will no longer boot up, it powers up, lights turn on but the screen stays blank.

Because of such a sudden and unexpected failure, the first thing that came to my mind was a motherboard problem. I couldn’t believe it myself, so I quickly started troubleshooting it… No beeps, battery works fine, it does the same with or with out memory or DVD drive, etc… it quickly came down to 2 things, the processor or the motherboard. Per my experience, CPU symptoms tend to be different, so I was sure it was a motherboard problem.

Research

I was starting to get really fucking pissed irritated, because I knew that the warranty had just expired, but I also knew that this wasn’t a user caused problem, so I went online to see if others were having similar issues… 2 minutes later… and WOW!, I found that thousands of HP laptops are having THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM! This problem seems to affect the entire HP Pavillion TX1000 family and other models.

If you have owned this laptop (or similar), you know that no matter what cooling pad you use it still gets really hot. Well, that’s the problem, it seems that the defective Nvidia chipset is overheating and after some time (ironically shortly after warranty expires) it dies, rendering the laptop unusable.

Models that are affected by defective graphic cards include:

HP 6000
HP 8000
HP 9000
And the entire tx1000 family

If you own one of these, you will sooner or later have similar problems.

While having thoughts about taking legal action , I decided to contact an HP representative, their answers were surely what I was expecting, they pretend this is a unknown, unreported issue, and that it’s not (yet) on their faulty crap list…

Nataly : Hello David.
Nataly : Welcome to HP Total Care for HP Notebooks.
Nataly : Hi, how are you doing today?
David C.: not really well..
David C.: my laptop just died, and my warranty recently expired
Nataly : I understand your concern.
David C.: it seems to be a motherboard issue, a known one
Nataly : David, I understand that the Notebook is nt turning ON, Am I correct?
David C.: it powers up, but it stays there, with the light on and nothing else
Nataly : I apologize for the inconvenience. However, I am glad to assist you in this regard.
Nataly : Thank you for the confirmation.
Nataly : May I know, for how long you are experiencing this issue?
David C.: for 1 day
Nataly : Okay.
David C.: Nataly, I don’t want to waste my time, I been reading about this issue in over 20 different forums, by hundres of users, I just want a solution to my problem
David C.: everybody else seems to be having this same issue with the same hp model, the tx1000 family
Nataly : David, I understand your concern. Let us start with the basic troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue.
David C.: I’ve been a computers tech for 10 years, I know how to troubleshoot a computer…
David C.: it’s not the memory, hard drive, wifi card, dvd drive…
Nataly : That’s great to hear.
Nataly : Could you please let me know the Serial Number and Product Number of the Notebook so that I could assist you better?
David C.: it has never been dropped or hit.
David C.: sure 1 sec
Nataly : Okay.
David C.: CNF7286XNB
Nataly : The Serial Number is a 10 digit alphanumeric number, for example: CNS34915MC.The Product Number is a 5-7 digit alphanumeric number, for example:DS542U. You will find that on a white sticker beneath the Notebook.
David C.: GA646UA#ABA
Nataly : Thank you for the information.
Nataly : David, could you please confirm the troubleshooting steps you have performed to isolate the issue?
David C.:
David C.: checked the memory compartment, removed the DVD drive, checked the HD compartment, removed the battery and powered it with the adapter alone, anyways those devices woundn’t cause this symptom
Nataly : I appreciate your efforts in troubleshooting the issue. However, I am glad to assist you further.
Nataly : May I ask few more questions so that I could isolate the issue better?
David C.: sure
Nataly : Thank you.
Nataly : Could you please confirm if the Notebook is able to boot into safe mode or it is not at all turning ON ( blank display)?
David C.: blank display, lights turn on and stay on, not sounds or beeps
Nataly : Thank you for confirming the same.
David C.: it does the same with or without battery, memory or CD drive
Nataly : David, as you have performed all the possible troubleshooting steps and the issue remains the same, this would be a hardware issue.
Nataly : The issue at hand seems to be related to a physical hardware malfunction which would require a physical examination to analyse the issue.
David C.: the issue is with the motherboard, and it’s a known issue
David C.: take this forum post for example…
David C.: http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/ques…
David C.: or this one
David C.: http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizs…
David C.: or this one
David C.: http://www.fixya.com/support/t1425677-hp_pavi…
David C.: or this one
David C.: http://www.fixya.com/support/p504866-hp_…
David C.: or this one over the UK
David C.: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-6342…
David C.: I can give you several more
Nataly : David, good to see that you are going through our HP websites.
Nataly : May I take 2-3 minutes of your time while I search for the relevant information?
David C.: sure
Nataly : Thank you David.
Nataly : Thank you for the time and patience.
Nataly : David, as this is the Hardware issue, I recomend you send the Notebook to HP for repair.
David C.: I’m not going to pay for it, this is a known issue of a bad motherboard to begin with
Nataly : I understand your concern.
David C.: besides, many people that sent it back for repair, keep having the same problem, because it’s a design flaw, this is simple a defective product
Nataly : David, this is not a known issue for the tx1210us Notebook.
David C.: hmm… so what do all those blogs and forums tell you?
Nataly : I am afraid, this Notebook is not covered under one time enhancement service.
David C.: it’s a component issue, and that component is used for several hp models
David C.: I’ll be very happy to take this into a small claims court and share my thoughts in 50+ blogs
Nataly : I have checked all the documents available with us. This model is no more covered under Onetime Service.
Nataly : If the Notebook is covered under One time Service, I would have arranged a Free Mail In Repair.
David C.: one way or another it will happen, I’m not going to get stuck with a laptop that I paid $1300 for a little over a year ago
Nataly : I am afraid, I see from our records that your notebook’s standard factory warranty has expired on: 08/25/2008.
David C.: I suppose there’s nothing else you can do, then I’ll have to do it on my own
Nataly : I understand. However, I recomend you either send the Notebook to Hp that our technicians diagonise the Notebook and fix the issue.
David C.: this is an extract from a hp forum post…
David C.: “You are not alone with this issue. There are hundreds if not more of us with the same issue. HP is disappointing us by turning a blind eye to this issue. I don’t think upper management is being informed as to how wide spread this is and how it will impact what was a loyal customer base.”
David C.: and it continues “I suggest anyone having problems with their model tx1000, tx1320 or any other like tablet pc call and write HP to see if we can inspirer them to correct their ways of not standing behind and doing the right thing with these defective units. “
David C.: how can I reach your manager?
David C.: this is what somebody else says:
David C.: “The problem has to do with a faulty video (GPU) chipset from Nvidia, the GeForce GO 6150. The chipset will overheat and shortly after that will start to fail. Replacing the motherboard will only delay it happening again. Personally, I want a refund to allow me to purchase something different. “
Nataly : David, those are the forums. Customers who have the same issue may raise their issues in that.
David C.: I was expecting an answer like that
David C.: actually Nvidia has recognized this issue, and they are not posting this in forums
David C.: NVIDIA says “significant quantities of laptop GPUs are defective”
David C.: from www.engadget.com
Nataly : I recomend you send the Notebook to HP for paid mail in Service so that technicians will isolate the exact cause and repair the Notebook.
David C.: free of charge?
Nataly : I am afraid, as the Notebook is out of Warranty, $ 298 willbe charged for the repair.
David C.: I think I’ll wait for HP to recall this product, but in the mean time I’ll filing this with a small claims court. There’s a lot of people out there with the SAME issue
David C.: how can I reach your management?
Nataly : I am afraid, this Notebook will not be covered under One time Service.
David C.: how can I reach your management?
Nataly : All right.
Nataly : David, I will escalate the case to our case manager so that you will receive a call from the case manager within 24 – 48 hours.
David C.: ok

What can we do?

Everybody needs to understand that *this defect is not caused by the user*, this is a component design flaw. I recommend that we all push for HP to either replace this product or refund us, It’s NOT o.k. for 1000’s of laptops to die a few months after their warranties expire.

Some actions to consider:

  • File a complaint against HP on the ripoff report website
  • File a complaint against HP on the BBB website
  • File a complaint against HP on the FTC website
  • If HP keeps avoiding this issue, consider suing them in a small claims court

Sooner or later they will have to address this issue, but by delaying this, they will not only lose money but also loyal customers.

Dont spend ur money trying to get a new graphic card, motherboard changed or installing new wifi card.its HP manufacturers defect and is a big issue and has no remedy even if you pay hp to get it repaired its useless it will die in a few days or months, the penny heat sink and hair blower are temporary and is the best remedy.
save your money instead of trying to get it repaired.i have done the penny heat sink, the wifi is not back, but it did boot the first time. since then it has had the blank screen a few times, but with the hair dryer blown into the exhausts it boots.am gonna use it till it lasts then when i am done i will never ever buy HP garabge again.my other laptop is lenovo and it is the best so far.HP is pure garbage packed nicely with eye pleasing design but inside is pure garbage and useless.

All, Agreed the whole of HP range suffers with this same issue.
I have a TX1340ea, DV6000 these are for home users, the business laptops don’t suffer from these issues 6715b, 6730s laptops, seem to be ok.
HP do need to sort this out and like most of the comments on the forums the more people that complain, HP will have to be forced into taking action on all there ranges as these are common faults with the GPU and the Nivida video card.
Mark Hurd is the CEO for HP so he should be bombarded with the complaints, only then we may get a response in resolving these issues with these laptops, they charge a lot for there laptops but give rubbish aftersales and try to charge us for repairing a problem they should have rectified along time ago.
They should recall and replace everyones laptops who have suffered with this overheating issue, blue screen, power turning off, WIFI not working and many other issues caused by the failure of the GPU.
The list of laptops are as follows:
    TX1000 Models.
    Dv2000 Models.
    DV6000 Models.
    DV9000 Models.

My experience with hp was so negative and i urge people to stay away from their products. I bought a brand new laptop and in its 2nd week some of the letters on the keyboard werent working. I contacted tech support and the were going to fix the laptop and told me to pay for shipping(ridiculous right considering i had just bought it). Then i asked them to replace the laptop all together and thats where the nightmare began. They referred me to their case managers, and the 1st case manager i spoke to was completely useless, she was arrogant and not helpful at all. I requested a 2nd case manager who was a bite polite but just as useless. This woman told me that she would put a request order for a new laptop and would get back to me in afew days. She never called, i would call and leave messages and she wouldnt call back in a timely manner. I finally spoke to her and she told me she was still waiing on an approval and would call me in 2days. Keep in mind while all this is happening my school work and regular work is suffering. On the 2nd day after not hearing back from her i decided to call their headquaters in California and tell them that i wanted to return the laptop and get a refund. The transferred me back to the same useless case manager and once again she had no solution to my problem. I had to wait for an answer and when the response came they declined both my requests for a replacement laptop and refund the only thing the offered was a repair, doing this was out of the question for me and i filed a lawsuit against them.

Found a solution for black screen, no post and lights on. As you know it’s the video chip detaching because of heat. So here’s the solution according to poster.

    http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-63420-black-screen-on-my-hp-tx1000

it worked for me. I taped ALL air vents and then wrapped the laptop with two towels. Laptop closed and upside down, because video chip is actually facing up when laptop is in normal position, and don’t want the video chip to come off even further when hot. So I set it upside down, turned on the laptop and put a bunch of heavy blankets over it for exactly 30 min. Turned it off and left it in that position (upside down for at least 1 hour). Turned it back on, and viola !! It worked!

I have the same problem with my tx1220us. It just died couple months ago. It won’t start up, only lights on, black screen. It either stays black screen with all lights on or just shuts down right away after power switch turn on.
How do we start a class action law suit against HP?
It is definitely a product defective issue.

I bought my wife a HP TX1000 laptop and 2 of her friends liked it and bought the same model soon after. About a year and a half later all three are dead with the exact same problems listed in this forum. I will never touch a another HP product again. Low quality complete crap.

Hi, I have the same problem, black screen and overheating. Since I took the guaranty of 3 years, I was able to clam for repair 3 TIMES and all this happens within an interval of month which means that the first time it got crash was in march of last year, exactly one month after I got it back it crash again !! and so on for 2 more time. Now I’m waiting for the last crash so I can get a credit for new laptop but obviously BestBuy will not give me a fair value of credit. I’m soo mad for buying this computer and for sure I will never again buy HP. What a waist of money and time.

I will be calling tech support with our info since this is the third computer we have had this happen to and it happened today again. I will be writing a letter as directed by Dextermat in the blog, as well as calling the BBB, FTC,and the RIPOFF report website if I do not get a response. I will let everyone know what happens because I am very persistent. Lori

My son has had this same problem with two HP laptop computers. They crash almost certainly upon the expiration of warranty. I have another son who also bought an HP computer and the same thing happened. Without warning, these computers just shut down after going to a blue or black screen. We are not sure what to do yet about it but I am certain we will not be getting another HP in this family and everyone I know will know about it.

I have two tx2000 which are unreliable. Both wireless internal quit functioning 14 months after owning it. One of them has a quarter circle crack on screen….I am so careful of my stuff but this one is strange. Customer service is polite but can not do anything for us. Do some of you have automatic shutdown on these?? They heat up and I have to clean the vents with compressed air. I work in an office environment which is pretty clean!! I am not buying HP in future……..

I bought my tx1320 end of November 2007, and in December 2009 it started the black-screen lights-on no-POST routine that we’re all experiencing. I bought the docking station, an extra battery and a spare power-cord for this puppy, so all-in-all I’m out around $2000 for a laptop that lasted 25 months. I am so mad I could spit nails. Like everyone else – I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HP PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE.

I’ve been building my own computers since 1985 and have worked for computer consulting companies for over 20 years. I’ve never seen anything like this – it’s freaking unbelievable. Aren’t there any class-action lawsuits on this? I will try all the suggestions that are posted here, and I will file all the complaints, and I’m going to try the Small Claims Court route as well but I’d really like to hurt HP where HP lives, and big money in a class-action lawsuit would hurt them the most. Hasn’t anyone started one?

    February 25th, 2010 at 13:31 | #18

Exact same problem. I bought the tx1320us in November of 2007. Last December (2009) it started having a problem booting up when I first turned it on, but it was intermittent. It kept getting worse and worse, and now I can’t get it into the POST routine no matter how many times I try to start it. This is ridiculous! I’m a computer consultant since 1987 and have built my own PCs since 1985 and I’ve never seen anything like this. I can’t believe HP won’t support their product. I’ll try everything on this site, but three words come to mind – CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.

I’ve had a tx1210US for 3 years… Didn’t use it all that much. Eventually, gave it to my wife after her old computer died. She used it a lot and within 3 months it died. Same thing: lights on, no screen. Was quoted 600 to fix. Bugger that I bought a Lenovo, ThinkPad Edge. I impressed because that one still works, cost me 579 and I didn’t have to mess around with HP customer ’support’.

  20. February 22nd, 2010 at 04:26 | #20

I have had the exact same experience with HP except for the hard drive formatting. I bought mine for around 60k in April 2007 and the motherboard failed in exactly 14 months ! From June 2008, the motherboard has failed thrice – and each time the service center took 2-3 months to repair the laptop spairs. So since June last year, I have used my laptop for just 4 months or so. The reason given is first that they have to verify if the warranty is valid and then delay in ordering parts.
I have tried shouting, threatening, pleading and finally resignation. Now the warranty has expired and if it fails one more time, I will go out and buy a Dell. Please NEVER EVER consider a HP product. It may seem like a good deal at that time, but there will be hell to pay later.

suffer from a similar problem in which my screen was blank when I turned on the computer, event though nothing was wrong with the power (lights and sounds were working).

I strongly suggest that everyone experiencing this type of provle should write a letter to Mr. Hurd – the CEO and PRESIDENT of HP.

    Here is the link: http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/execteam/email/hurd/

Although he may not personally respond, someone from HP customer service will problably contact you to help remedy your problem.

Here is a really good one!! What can I do? I bought a brand new hp pavillion dv2000 and when it quit working and was out of warranty i opened the back to find old labels ripped off inside with scratch marks where somebody was trying to remove the glue and old lables and barcodes and then new labels were applied over top. this was in two locations. clearly a refurbished model- but i paid full price and it was not indicated on my reciept or otherwise that this was a refurb. i contact hp and of course they deny it and so does the chain where i bought it from!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi I have a TX1000 that had this exact problem. Minimal use same symptoms, same complete denial from HP customer support.
    Very frustrating.
I have filed a report with ripoffreport.com after finding this website.

It seems like a calculated issue addressed with a strategic corporate denial.
Many people with this problem would just buy a new laptop not knowing they may have options.

Has there been any progess with this issue?

We all need to collectively sue HP not only for the piece of shit but also for our valuable time we wasted for talking to customer care and wasyed time on net to find the fixes and running around to get repairs.

If toyota can recall the defective cars and the CEO apologises to his customers then why not HP.

Let us try to assemble all affected people in this forum and hire a lawyer who can dig out every penny out of HP who has knowingly been selling their defective product for years.

I had a dv2740 laptop and had the same issue.. after restarting it hundreds of times i got so pissed off and thought of giving a last try a weeek later before trashing it. I still got the same blank screen with all lights on. I tried ctrl+Alt+Del then I was able to see the task mgr and i clicked the button show the processes of all users(by default it was showing only system processes).. to my surprise the system came up.. this went for 6 months after which it totally went down..

I am not sure if this could help anybody but thought of sharing this..

  27. February 9th, 2010 at 11:58 | #27

got exact same problem!! first wireless died, then black screen. i own two hp laptop, both died in one and half year, seems like i am not the only one unlucky! but unfortunately,, there’s no too many choices in canada, i will go to US to buy a new one!
    HP really Sucks!!!

  28. February 7th, 2010 at 13:57 | #28

I had the same problem but I took it completely apart and reseeded the video chip. I left it running for around 2 weeks without shutting it down and the same thing happened (blank screen). I think even replacing the mother board will be a waste of $$$ at this time.

I have an HP notebook Tx1320us. The problem I face is the same as others with similar model: wireless and screen just don’t work. Technical support in Brazil confirmed this is a manufacturing deffect but refuses to give appropriate solution for it. All they suggest is to buy another equipment. warranty has expired but I think we need to pursue our consumer rights.

    Hi Everyone,

I first want to say that this blog is wonderful, there is so much good information, everyone has the same frustrations with limited solutions. Here is mine (and a potential fix KIND OF)

So today while i was in class my HP TX1220us did the dreaded “black screen” which most of you are aware of…I took out the battery and tried the AC power…nothing…i took out tested the RAM…nothing..I checked the connection on the hard drive and WiFi…nothing…Here is what KIND OF worked for me right now…

After about 5 times of restarted the laptop repeatedly I finally get the boot screen…if you can get to that step you might have a change to use your laptop….Here is what I did:

I started the HP in safe-mode, and it loaded up miraculously…From there I went to the device manager (right click ‘my computer’ and view device manager)…Go to the section with the NVIDIA graphics card, and right click it and disable it….From there I restarted my laptop and it started up again…

I’m not claiming this is a great fix; it certainly is not. And I’m not claiming this will work for anyone else….but hey if you are hanging on to a $1300 coaster, it is worth a shot to get some use out of it, no? Please post if this works for anyone else and try to spread the word if it does work. For me, i bought this laptop used, and there is no way i’m dumping $300 into a fix, so atleast i can HOPEFULLY get some use out of this laptop….

Well I’m glad to see that I’m not crazy. Bought mine in Dec. 2007 and without a warning the exact same issue occurred. Never had a problem and actually was so happy with my laptop I told everyone to buy one. I think I will tell them the opposite (that is, no HP!). Thanks for saving me a trip to HP support here in Greece. It would have be a waste of time and money. I’d rather shove my laptop elsewhere…

Well what a coincidence! (irony) My HP dv6700 (purchased Feb 2008) which has always run hot during operation, fried its (as supplied from new) western power 250gb hard drive last September barely six months after the warranty expired. After replacing the drive with an old one from another laptop, I’ve had no further problems until this weekend just gone (30th Jan 2010) when it has just burnt out my AC power pack. The pack also got very hot during operation since new, but at the weekend I could distinctly smell burning plastic and shortly after that it stopped working completely, (no light on the laptop and no searing heat from the pack). How is this possible? Any feedback would be welcome.
The laptop still works fine on battery power (I can charge the battery from my old Compaq, but the AC pack for my dv6700 is completely dead. Unfortunately I also lost my spare power pack too, as I thought it must be just one of those things with the first one and decided to just switch to my spare, which went exactly the same way within twenty minutes or so of plugging in and booting up!
Has anybody come across this one before? Any suggestions about a fix? HP’s helpline, “can’t tell me anything about that”, after putting me through to five different departments and then trying to charge me £15:99 to speak to a tech. Their authorised out of warranty repair centre will repair it, for a fixed £267 fee, (???regardless of the problem???) but would not discuss with me if there were similar issues currently on their work tables and if this was a known fault with HP products. It all smells a bit fishy to me as today after checking their website and googling for info I’ve come across pages and pages of similar power related problems with HP products over the last five to six years!

Is anybody pursuing this legally? If so could somebody give me some info regarding this.
    Thanks

So, my TX2000 lost its screen a month or so ago… it was a gradually getting worse (but fast), then one day it just went black. I got so mad after a while, that I slammed the lid shut (not super hard) and broke the touch screen…GRRR!!!.

I too, am a few months past warranty.

I took the screen apart and removed the digitizer, then put it back together and prayed. The screen came on (looked better that ever, without grainy touch screen) and I was able to still use the pen etc…

I used it for the rest of the night, but it didn’t work again in the morning…or ever since.

Question is… will they still fix the problem of the black screen? I’m not worried about fixing the touch screen.

I imagine NOT, since I damage the screen (though, as a result of my frustration, with their defect)

    Anyone?

    hi all,
the same blank screen problem happened with my Hp TX 2028 Au also. HP really sucks. We have to complain against hp . My idea is something like, get attraction from all sufering users worlwide by forming a forum or using a social community activities site (orkut, face book, twitter ect.). Then we will be able to get the real attention from HP people. A huge group complaining and moving against “HP Product”, will definitely open their eyes to think something better. At lest they wont repeat the same ‘easy going mentality’ towards the trusted customers.

Has anyone contacted the BBB or FTC and HP refunded them? Or has HP done anything to correct the issue after the BBB was notified?

I just filed a complaint and would like to know if HP will actually do something about this. I sent an email to the “CEO email” last month only to be called by a case manager who was useless and denied the problem and wanted to charge me $300 to look at it and “fix” it.

Hi, I’m from Mexico, my tx1000 have the same problem and the hp support team told me that it is not a factory issue (WTF). Anyway that’s not the only annoying thing, I use my computer for working and I can’t afford having it in the shelf so I decided to pay the repair. HP response: “We don’t have the part in existence, please call us every thuesday (day that HP updates their inventory) and we will inform you if we have the part”. The cost of the part: 300 USD WTF. Warranty time over the changed part: 3 months. Yes!!!! 3 months. I don’t know what more to think about HP. The worse service I have seen.

I own a computer repair company and I can tell you that a majority of my laptop repairs are HP for this particular problem. It has gotten so bad with HP laptops that keep failing after I replaced the motherboards that I now refuse to service them unless it is unrelated to boot issues. HP should realize that you can only burn your customers so much before word gets around how poorly your products are made, and more importantly, how well they are supported.
I warn all of my clients to avoid HP products now.

  42. January 15th, 2010 at 07:15 | #42

Exact same issue, bought the machine tx1000 Nov 2007, black screened around Feb 2009, but resurrected a couple of months ago! (doing the switch off and on, tapping F11 thing) and it re-booted, recovered from a serious issue etc. I’ve always thought this was a Vista issue, not hardware, but the evidence looks like its hardware. It’s now died again a few days ago, and the F11 trick isnt working this time. could well be the chipset.

I bought my tx1320 tablet in October of 2007… in December of 2008 it quit working. I immediately took it to Best Buy to have it looked at and they told me it was the Motherboard and that I should contact HP right away. After speaking with HP’s costumer service and being told that since my warranty had expired (only 48 days before) that there was nothing I could aside from paying over $400 to have it repaired. I had paid $1,300 for the computer just a year earlier and was not about to throw another $400+ at it to get it running again. I was in my senior year of college and didn’t have the time to explore further options or the money to get it fixed so I put it in the top of my closet and forgot about it. I just graduated from college last week and with my new found spare time I decided to re-investigate the issue. After searching the web and finding hundreds of others’ complaints about the exact same issue I would like to see if there is anything HP can do to help me get the machine in working order. I had high expectations for this HP product and that’s why I dug deep into my pockets to buy the laptop in the first place. I really loved the tablet and would have expected it to hold out longer than 14 months.

Same exact problems with my tx1320. Ran hot very very hot since dau one. Wireless went out after 14 months and couple of months later black screen with no boot. Have had other reliability problems with a HP desk top, printer and digital camera. They all look good and are loaded with cool features, but that’s about all. What are cool looks and all the features good for if you can’t use the darn things for more than a few months?! I will never ever buy a HP product again and I will make sure to spread the word where ever I go. If we all tell everyone we know and meet, the whole world will know about it sooner than later. I have the same issue with my TX1000. The Wireless went out first and then it will power up but nothing on the screen. I disconnected hard drive, memory and dvd burner one by one and still nothing happened. I am maintaining at least 12 HP 9000s at work and I don’t think they will be happy if i won’t recommend HP Printers anymore. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. I have a DV6000 as well and it overheats often. I guess I have to suck it.

I have the same issues with my laptop. My wireless card went out first and when I called HP, they said that I was no longer covered under warranty, and that the repair would be approx. $300. There was no way that I was going to pay that for a wireless card and the installation when my father is a computer technician. I found the chip pn ebay and was just going to have him install it when…My screen goes out. The computer will be fully charged and seem as if it’s booting up, but stay blank. I hear the noises, the fans, and I see the light. I know that basically I’m regurgitating the same things that everyone else is saying, but obviously this problem is common and warrants a recall or courtesy replacement. I will NEVER get an HP again. Since this laptop blew out on me (and I hadn’t backed up ANYTHING!), I decided to look for a new one. I saw the new HP TX model and wanted it soooo bad, but after my fiasco with the one that I have now, I spent half the price on a new Lenovo. Hopefully it doesn’t fail me as my HP or Toshiba have.

I have a dv2740se HP laptop…. ive had this for almost 2 years, bought it brand new, luckily i purchased extended warranty…. yesterday i experienced the worst, as i just finished using my laptop… worked great, i shut the lid and sat it down…. next thing i hear is, it powered off.? Im thinking… i didnt shut it off or put it on standby. Next thing i knew… i turned it on, and there it sat… a blank screen with all lights on, it loads (checks) the cd-rom then nothing. So i called HP, ran through troubleshooting…. cameup nothing… so he says we need 2 send it in ( go figure) and have it back within 2 weeks.

    - Ive been a hp fan for over 10 years… never really had much hardware issues… but 1x i did, they supposed to fix it but returned broke… all outwar i had with them, but now lets see what happens this time @Krystal

  68. December 10th, 2009 at 08:41 | #68

Just replaced the screen inverter on an HP TX2000 which displayed similar simptoms (blank screen, images just visible but only by shining a torch at the screen obliquely).

Unfortunately having forked out money for the replacment, I now find that the problem is a ubiquitous one affecting all of the TX range. It is in fact an overheating problem that kills the links to the graphics chip (GPU) So here is another case to add to the exver increasing number of identical failures in this range. How many hundreds (thousands?) of customers have fallen foul of this. It is a disgrace. I cannot believe that HP are going to be so foolish as to ignore this. It will create so much bad publicity for them. I mean, who would want to buy from a company that despite overwhelming evidence of a damaging (and potentially dangerous) fault, simply brushes the problem under the proverbial carpet?!

Please, Please put the word about the streets. Tweet & Retweet this, Digg it, Get the problem noticed because HP have responsibilities to their customers and its high time they were reminded of that!

    Hi Guys!

I’m from Sweden and started experiencing problems with my tx1000 about 18 months after purchase. It started with the laptop not being able to charge and the blue light wouldn’t come on, wifi stopped working, the screen went black and finally the laptop would not start up. If I got lucky it would start up when it wanted to…

I was lucky enough to have had an extended warranty on the pc and HP agreed to take it into repair. Three months later and 3 times at repair – HP has failed to solve the issue. They have changed the motherboard, upgraded the bios, swapped out the cooling system and replaced the fan. HOWEVER the laptop still has problems starting up and gets extremely hot (wifi has been fixed).

This is probably good proof that none of these things are the issue causing the problems with these computers! Here in Sweden however we have a law: “if the pc has been in repair 3 times and still isn’t working – the consumer will be refunded”. I am at this moment trying to make this clear to HP that they must do this since I am a student and I can’t spend any more time on waiting for my pc…

Hope this helps someone out there!

Exact same for me. Wireless went out first. No, wait, my battery did. It lasts for literally 2 minutes before it shuts off. THEN, the wireless went out some time after that. Blank startup screen followed a month or so later. It has been taking more and more tries to actually turn on. Now, the monitor goes out sometimes, too, after it has started up.

I wish I understood all of this tech jargon that everyone is using. I mean most of it is self-explanatory but I am just so frustrated right now that everything looks to me like it is written in Swahili.

I have owned an effing tx1000 for almost three years and I have ALWAYS had problems with it. Now, it’s just retarded. It’s doing the thing where the blank screen comes up when I try to boot. I take out the battery and try… same thing. I take out the disc drive and try… same thing. If I knew anymore than the basics, I’d try but it seems that won’t get me far anyway.

All I want is for HP to suck it and give me my money. I’m going to MAC, dammit.

just following up.. my extended warranty was good and it was no problem if I had to use it. However, the problem turned out to be that my laptop was in permanent hibernate mode. all we had to do was to remove the battery and power up using the external power and then replace the battery. all is good now.

We have the tx1305ca. It also has the back screen problem. based on everything that I have read, it sounds like they have to revert back to using lead based solders to keep the connections working properly. Fortunatly, we are the lucky ones and have accidentally purchased the extended warranty from Future Shop. so, supposedly, we are still under warranty until January 2011…. wish me luck…

This issue also occurs with the Compaq F500 series and the Compaq F700 series.
I bought the F500 for college in sophomore year and I sort of put it up and only used it if I had to. That shit was hooooooooot. I couldn’t put it on my lap, my chest (i could lie down and type b/c I could support the laptop on my breasts >_>;;;) – notebook cooler didn’t even work. I thought that this was how all laptop worked (my first laptop) so I was like ok, maybe notebook coolers are a rip off. So.. bleh. :\
David – I has a similar conversation with HP’s tech support and I was getting ready to stab this bitch though the phone/computer – but I calmed myself down. It isn’t their fault – it is HP’s.
I am taking my ass to NY Small Claims. Don’t fuck with the consumer.

I started having the same problem with my 14 month old TX2120us two days ago. I have exchanged several emails with HP support and the conclusion is to fork out £262 to an authorized service center. From what I have gathered so far from various forums, this will only delay the inevitable. Instead of paying that amount to fix, I will sell it on ebay and buy a netbook instead!

Everything mentioned here happened to me TWICE (without including the Wifi card error that ‘uninstalls’ itself after about a year).

I heard of a hair dryer trick that repairs the BLACK SCREEN error, but haven’t tried it yet.

I agree that HP should take full responsibility for faulty products.

I would like for them to replace the unit or refund the original purchase price (then I may be able to get a MAC).

HEY PCs!!! STOP RIPPING US OFF WITH PIECES OF SH*T COMPUTERS!!!

wifi has died on my TX2110us; does not show up in device manager. I purchased a new wifi card and put in but still does not show up… must be the motherboard.
Will definately never purchase another HP product! This laptop is about four months out of warranty and HP will do nothing for me.

I have a tx model tablet laptop and I’ve had many MANY problems with it. They started a few months ago when the wireless network card randomly stopped working. Then the battery stopped charging. Most recently (last week), I have the above problem. The computer would turn on and I’d just get a blank screen.

I kept turning it on and off and sometimes it would turn off on it’s own.

Occasionally it would get to the HP screen and stay there for a few seconds, then say “Operating System not found”.

I thought, fine, I’ll reinstall Windows.

I *think* I’ve got it working, at least for now.

The computer would turn on and boot off the CD just fine, but only if it was unplugged and running off the battery, if it was plugged in, it would not boot up.

I reinstalled windows (well, reverted back to XP), and reformatted the hard drive, and now it boots up fine (although I need to find all the drivers again).

The network card still isn’t detected though.

Oh well. I don’t know what I’m going to do.

I can tell you all exactly what the problem is.
I am a computer technician and I see this problem with these HP laptops all the time. The problem is the NVIDIA processor gets disconected from the motherboard. There are many small connections between the proceesor and the motherboard. The only way to fix this is to use a special machine that we have, which reconnects the processor. This is called reflowing the processor. We do this all the time on XBOX’s and PS3’s when getting the ring of death. All other computer repair places will make you replace the motherboard. Which I don’t blame them since this is hard to do. The machine is expensive too. The repair is costly but less then buying a new motherboard. In some cases this problem affects the NVIDIA network functions, and this process fixes that too. The fact is that the problem is with NVIDIA not HP. This is a problem on many different brands of laptops not just HP. I’ve never encountered an ATI problem of this kind. HP with ATI never have this problem.

Same here – but 18 months. TX2000. First, WiFi went out, out of warranty. HP Chat told me to remove and reset wireless card. I did so, it rebooted and re-discovered card and worked – that one time. Once I rebooted again, wifi gone. Today – no boot, black screen, just as stated in this forum. And it IS a Nividia card.

Tx1000, wireless had 2 be sent out and fixed twice in one year plus over 10 tech support calls in between the year. HP will do nothing about this problem , says send it in again for services. I told them you can squeeze a lemon not fix one. I’ll never buy a HP again, they don’t stand by their product. 1300.00 I paid for this piece of garbage.

I have the same problem with my HP pavilion tx1000. I totally agree with you it is a design flaw and therefore HP is totally responsible for their error. My notebook is not even two years old yet and it’s been giving me troubles since the day I bought with its extremly slow OS *visa*.

Before this, I had a Dell which I used it extensively and sometimes I leave it on for a couple of days. However, I never had any troubles for four years not even a single one.

Now with HP my life is miserable.

HP needs to recall this piece of crap. The HP Pavillion tx1000 DOES NOT WORK and they need to acknowledge it (whether they like it or not)!

It’s not us costumers’ fault for mistakenly buying a product from you untalented, stupid HP technicians.

You, HP, should have been more responsible for your models. You should create a lasting model. Not some piece of junk to cheat money from your customers.

Telling us to pay for your mistake is very low. You guys suck!

I bought Tx1000 hp laptop touch screen for 1300$ in Sam’s club PUERTO RICO a year ago. Withing 5 months the wireless card did not function and it took 10 min for the computer to turn on. One year after I bought my HP laptop it started to stay in the black screen one I turn on. It will not boot and Iv tried everything but the motherboard hardrive died. I lost so many college documents and pictures… I would like to help spread the message about the terrible quality of HP computers… They stole my money because they know they have a terrible product for 1300$ on the market.

This is to everyone who owns a TX Series notebook with the GPU issue.

HP is not going to do a recall of this model unless we can generate negative publicity about the matter. I know this may seem somewhat futile, but i urge everyone who has issues with this model to do the following:

    1. Write a letter to HP about this issue, and send some forum postings of other customers having the same issue along with the letter. Request that HP do a recall of the entire TX series. They may offer to fix your laptop, but please turn them down as request that they do a recall of the entire TX series.

    2. The most important part. Send a copy of your letter to each of the major television network, asking that their investigative team take a look at this issue. Please send your letter to the major networks to stations located in the New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. I would be great if everyone sent a letter to all the major networks in all three cities.

    3. This ties in to step 2. Send all letters within a 15 to 21 day period. If we can get 500 letters to one network, i am certain that this story would make the news, and shed enough negative light on HP that they may be forced to do a recall.

    4. Copy this post to every Forum that you know has posts about this issue. I will take it upon myself to copy this to as many posts as i can, but it does not hurt to have duplicates.

    5. PLEASE send all letters between November 1, 2009 and November 21, 2009.

tx1210us, 18 months old failed. Same won’t boot/black screen problem reported by so many. I just got off the phone with HP case manager assigned to my complaint and he told me that although HP has an extended warranty program for some models, it doesn’t apply to my tx1210us. He would not confirm that the whole tx1000 family has this problem but rather implied it was a small minority of units that had problems. He gave me the number of the Corporate office where I can call to escalate the problem. That number is 1-650-857-1501, if anyone wants to call. I’m calling them in the morning.

I have tx2000 for 13 months. A month before the warranty expired, it didn’t wake up from sleep. HP representative told me to remove the battery and do a hard reset. It worked. I thought it was one time thing. Then few weeks after the warranty expired the laptop sometimes didn’t wake up from a hibernation, a sleep, or a shutdown, but every time I was able to get it started right back up doing the hard reset. This month it took much longer to get it back up. I tried hard resets, removing the battery and DVD drive, pressing F8 (don’t know why, but it works sometimes) in every combination. Now I’m still have my computer, but I wonder for how long. Is there anything else I can do? Would changing the power setting to Balance reduce the overheating problem?

    Hi all,

It’s all be the problem of BGA balls crack on the Nvidia BGA IC and design flaw.

I had reheat the IC using a BGA rework station using reflow temperature profile, and my tx1000 can

boot and works for every day since then.

HP or their PCBA subcontractor shall already aware and undestand this problem of BGA crack either on

their product qualification or the thermal test. This is with evidence of red color epoxy or underfill

material applied on the perimeter of the BGA IC and ‘hope’ to hold the BGA down. This is BGA balls

crack is an issue seen on lead-free product.

You might use hair drier, but unless you reach about ~240 degree Celcius which to melt the solder

ball, the chances of repair shall not have high pass chances.

My wifi died under warranty…of course, first the online rep was rude and claimed there was no way I could have windows 7 on my laptop, even though I got it perfectly legitimately through MSDN, and then refused to take the repair even though it was a documented hardware failure completely unrelated to the software.

I finally ended up calling and talking to a tech support guy that didn’t have his head up his ass, and looked up the problem, and immediately issued an RMA, and told me the OS didn’t matter, and that I didn’t even have to send in the HDD with the laptop. Foolishly, I didn’t take the HDD when I sent it in.

2 weeks later, I get my laptop back, with working wifi card…and a wiped HDD, partitioned, and downgraded back to Vista. I’m an IT consultant, and I charge $50/hr for my work. So I called HP and spent an hour and half on the phone with them, demanding an address to send my invoice for 10 hours of labor plus costs for the Windows and Office licenses I lost in when they decided to wipe my HDD. The declined, were very rude in doing it, and said that it is impossible for them to do any work without re-imaging the HDD. Furthermore, despite their own support explicitly saying they wouldn’t touch the HDD, they fell back on the terms of the warranty claiming that they aren’t liable for any data lost during service.

Tomorrow, I get to sit on hold again, this time with the BBB and possibly the FTC for deceitful business practices. And none of my clients will ever be getting an HP.

    I have tx2000, paid $1400 for a custom laptop on April 2008.
As soon as got it was overheating too much, called in, HP said was “normal” but offered to replace fan, after fan was replaced still having same issue. Used cooling pad to prevent excessive overheating.
In May 2009 wireless stopped working… updated drivers..and did basic troubleshooting… nothing..
Called HP support, pretty much same story… warranty had expired just two months ago, so no help there.
Did some research on the forums… and found same info stated above. Read that the next “simptom” was the black screen – lights on but doesnt turn on.. last week did it. however after trying for a second time would turn on… today tried at least 20 times.. it seems like it finally died.
    will NOT buy HP ever!

My problem with my HP laptop is different but still being screwed the same. The rubber feet on my laptop got stuck to a table because it was coming off; when it got stuck the laptop fell out of my hands and of course broke. Contacted HP but they say “because the laptop was in my hands, it is my fault”. Thats bull, it’s a design flaw and should be replaced. Of course, the laptop is only a few weeks out of warranty. I have HP all over my house but now and considering DELL.

I’m having the same exact problem. When I first bought the HP Pavillion TX1000 two years ago, my WIFI card had problems. Thus, I had to sent it back to HP center for repairs twice. Furthermore, the laptop overheat as well and the cooling pad doesn’t work at all. Now, my laptop decided to die, it will no longer boot up, it powers up and lights turn on but the screen stays blank. Had tried to power on and off many times but the screen is still blank. My advice to all new buyers is DO NOT BUY HP LAPTOP!!! Many complaints were made but HP is NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Hope something would be done SOON.

    Hi all,
I bought this year old tx1000 from a friend just few days ago. He was leaving canada so got from him a little cheap. I enjoyed using it till evening and when I tried to switch it on in the night, it just doesn’t do anything except black screen.
It seems like when I press the power button, it reads from CD, lits all lights, that’s how computers do usually while booting, but then does nothing else. I have got no warranty, nothing with me to claim anything from HP or anyone.
I tried to take out HD and placed it back, tried taking out RAM (both pieces of 1 GB each and shuffling them up in two slots) and also pressed ALT+F10 while start up but …………….. I would appreciate if anyone can help please.

Mine went out during warranty, spent 2+ hours with support, finally sent me a wifi unit and I installed, no go, they had it picked up and repaired in a timely manner, worked until out of warranty, did a live chat deal, they are playing dumb about high service rate, good at saying: “I’m Sorry” and nothing else, wrote CEO, like he gives a crap, but maybe I’m wrong, time will tell, I kept telling the support agent and his supervisor that I will never, ever spend another cent on any HP product, and all they could say is that they understand…Piss poor customer relations to say the least but they probually get paid a buck a week …. I have a HP TX2000 model laptop. All of a sudden, yesterday morning when I opened my laptop it didnt boot, all lights glowing screen wouldn’t show up, I restarted nothing happened. I tried few easy tricks on internet, I took out the battery, hold the power button for 1 min and then plugged power back nothing happened, then I tried removing the RAM and hard disk out and put them back after 2 min and restarted it worked fine, I was stupid enough, without backing it up at that moment, I tried to restart and now it wouldnt start even if I remove RAM or whatever….Now I am about to try the penny trick, but before that I have to retrieve the data from my hard disk, I am already behind schedule with my work and others are waiting on me…HP really sucks….they cant sell crap for 1000$. After some search on internet I understood its a serious design flaw they dont want to acknowledge…I pledge not to buy any hp product in future and will discourage anyone I know buying…ahhhh

I am sorry to say that my 20 month old laptop has got the following errors
#1 Computer does not boot/reboot or wake up from stand-by when hot.
#2 The VGA out is missing collors.
#3 The WiFi card is totally gone

The problems started exactly the same time as it went out of warranty (one year).

HP does not take their responsibility for this, and does not give a… When buying a “premium” laptop like this, I really expect a longer lifetime than a year!!!

Conclusion: Never, ever buy a HP laptop, and never recommend some other for it!!!
